The photo collection is broken into two types:
Portraits are pre-selected, meticulously pre-corrected and cropped by The Living Archive staff. Click here to view some portraits.
Archive Photos are individual image from the archive.
Upon your order, your photo will be scanned from the original camera negative in high-resolution, cropped per your specification, and touched up. Touch-up includes:
An Archive Fee is added to each archive photo. This helps defray some of the cost of acquiring, indexing, preserving the photos, creating this site, and preparing your photo for print.
High-Quality Prints are developed on Kodak ENDURA professional photo paper with a vibrant glossy finish.
Canvas Gallery Wraps are printed directly onto museum quality canvas material using high quality archival inks.
The canvas print is wrapped around a stretcher frame so that the photo’s edges are visible on the sides of the frame.
Hardware to hang your canvas is attached.
The resolution of our high-quality photo prints is about 10 times higher than most computer screens. For this reason, it sometimes occurs that even after our correction and touchup of photos, they may appear nicer on screen than they do in print.
We will expend every reasonable effort to assure that your photo print or canvas is as beautiful as possible. However, it is important to remember that when it comes to archival photos, what you see on the screen is not always what you get, and your photo print or canvas might not look exactly as it does on the screen.
The larger you print your photo, the more you are stretching the resolution of a small negative of a larger print area.
In addition, by cropping your photo, you cause an even smaller negative to print over a larger area. The smaller portion of a photo you choose, the more the quality will drop.
We recommend that you crop cautiously, and at the minimum possible.
95% of our archival photos were photographed on 35mm film. Larger 6x6 and medium-format negatives make up a small part of the collection and, usually, these retain their quality to larger sizes. Look at the bottom right of the photo for the negative size.
We reserve the right to cancel an order for content reasons or if we feel that the quality of the print won’t hold up to our standards. In such a case, we will refund the full amount you were charged for your order.
Once your photo is scanned and corrected, it will be fulfilled at a top quality photo printing lab in California.
Most U.S. orders will be shipped directly to you. However, we may wish to inspect orders that involve a complex color-correction or an especially large size…

Our system estimates the processing and shipping times based on “business days.” Orders placed after 6 p.m. will be processed the next day. “Days” are Monday through Friday besides for Jewish and, lehavdil, US legal holidays. When ordering, please assume your order will take longer when such days are upcoming.
Unfortunately, because all Living Archive prints and canvases are custom-processed and printed based on your order, once we begin to process your photo for you, we are unnable to cancel your order. Nor can we accept any returns. If you need any further information about materials, sizes, shipping or anything else about your order, please contact us before placing your order.
We plan to gradually scan all of the 400,000 or-so photos in The Living Archive photo collection and to gradually make them available at this site. However, if you need to access the photos of a specific event right away, you can help us by donating to the photos of this event scanned. We will expedite that scanning of this event and, G-d willing, we’ll have the photos scanned, cataloged, and on the site within 3-6 weeks.
If you’d like to sponsor the scanning of a specific event, the cost is $90 per 36 exposure film. Contact us for a list of dates and events for which we have negatives.
